Match Report: Saywell International (Arun and Chichester) Youth League

Barnham Trojans Red U11 3 v 2 AFC Worthing Youth U11
Date: 28/09/2014
Venue: Olivers Meadow
Atoms Goals: Stan 36 mins, Lewis 55 mins.

AFC Worthing Youth started the match really well and put Barnham Trojans under some early pressure with some good passing and moving off the ball. With the team pressing they won several corners, but could not convert them. Sophie and Charlie playing full backs had their work cut out to keep a keen Trojans team at bay. Jack playing just in front did well to thwart several Trojans attacks. An unfortunate Sam picked up an injury and needed to be replaced forcing a team reshuffle.

The deadlock was broken by a great shot from distance that just eluded Joe in goal. The goal galvanized Youth who put Trojans under immense pressure for the remainder of the first half. There were some great runs from Stan and Rye but the team couldn’t quite apply a finish to complement the endeavour. Half time 1-0

The second half saw Zach play up front on his own and was so busy the Trojans defence at times needed three of their players to contain him. With Dan played well on the wide right combining well with Stan and passing through their half and getting in some good crosses.

Trojans then added to their lead when we switched off from a long throw-in. The Trojans striker made no mistake from just inside the area. Although finding themselves down in the game, the teams heads stayed-up and it wasn’t long before Stan smashed one in the back of the net after going on a mazy run.

Joe made some great finger tip saves, twice denying Trojans by expertly pushing the ball onto and over the bar. Sadly, AFC Worthing Youth were again undone by a set piece, this time from a throw in. Not only was Joe saving the team from going further behind, both Sophie and Dan cleared Trojans efforts off the line!

Youth pushed forward deserving something more out of the game. Having put Trojans under pressure at various times during the match with some great passing and good balls in the box, the team scored a second goal. Lewis bought the ball down from a height and thrashed it into the back of the net. Youth were then bombarding the Trojans goal and created chance after chance with all Trojans players back in their penalty area defending desperately to hang-on to the lead and claim the victory. Player of the match for AFC Worthing Youth: Sophie – cool as a cucumber as usual!
