Celebrating Girls Football Week with AFC Worthing Youth Divas

#WeCanPlay – Celebrating the Girls Football Week initiative that is running from the 5th to 11th October.

Some facts about the women’s game:

  • In 2014 over 147,000 female players competed in affiliated league and cup competitions; this has risen from just 10,400 in 1993
  • In the UK over 1.1. million girls play kickabout football
  • Scotland was the first country to encourage women to play football
  • Until the formation of the Football League in 1885, football was dominated by the public schools
  • In April, 1885, Preston North End announced that women would be allowed free entry to all home games. Over 2,000 women turned up for the first game!
  • Nettie Honeyball helped to pioneer women’s football in England
  • The first official match played by women took place at Crouch End in London on 23rd March, 1895. The girls were organized into teams that represented North and South London.
  • ‘Girls only football’ is now played competitively in secondary schools (this was not the case 30 years ago – 1984)
  • Girls integrating with boys and playing together for youth football clubs
  • The introduction of the FA Women’s Super League started in March 22, 2010
  • For the first time ever, the EA sports game FIFA features the cream of the women’s game in the 2016 release
  • FA banned women playing football in 1920 and should not be encouraged as it was not suitable for women in 1971 the FA overturned its decision and rescinded the ban. With the ban gone, women’s football could finally begin to grow and make-up for lost time.
  • In 1991 the first league for women was introduced as well as competitive cup football.
  • Women‘s football maintained its development and in 2005 the UEFA women’s championship was played in Britain. Games were shown live on BBC2 with the tournament attracting over two million people.
