Challenge Cup Final – Sunday 11th May

Sunday 11th May, The Holbrook Club, Horsham, SCWGFL Under 13’s Challenge Cup Final

AFC Worthing Divas 3 – 7 Eastbourne Girls

Another day to remember for our wonderful football club began bright and early at Broadwater Green.  Our team of Divas, and their avid supporters, climbed aboard the team minibus and coach for the journey to Horsham for the Sussex County Women & Girls Football League Under 13’s Challenge Cup Final.

On their arrival, the girls headed for the changing rooms before a final rousing team talk from their coach Darren Jeffery.  Tactics, set pieces, defensive moves, attacking play and the belief in each other, spurred them on to head out to face Eastbourne Girls, for what was to be a final worth watching.

The wind was fiercely blowing right across the pitch but the girls began their warm-up routine while friends and family took their place on the side-lines.  Then came the formalities with the opposition and match officials.  By this time our supporters had well and truly found their voices.

And so it began…………it really was a fantastic game to watch.  From some amazing defending, to some precisely timed runs down the wing, pure hard work from the midfield, awesome passing all round, to the fearless efforts of our goalkeeper.  Each and every member of the team gave it their all.

However, today wasn’t to be our Divas day and the final result was AFC Worthing Divas 3 – 7 Eastbourne Girls.  The emotions our Divas showed as the final whistle blew really proved how committed  they all are to each other and how much they wanted to be lifting the cup today.  As a team the Divas have come such a long way and many of those players on the pitch today have been with the squad since the age of 8.  With the addition of mew players and strength in numbers the team play the beautiful game how it should be played, fairly and with the right attitude, desire and respect.

Credit has to go to our dedicated Divas coach Darren and his able assistant DJ, and also to Craig for his time and input throughout the season.  Without their commitment, development and drive the Divas would not have been where they are today, in a cup final and finishing 3rd in the league. A huge thank you goes out to them all.

Many thanks today also go to Cat Smith for designing our match day program.  To Jackie & John King for their help in arranging the minibus.  To Nic and all his team at La Campania for their sponsorship and on-going support.  Also to Woods Travel for their lovely driver and to Les for our goody bags!!!  In addition to this, grateful thanks go to all our parents and our extended ‘Divas Family’ that continue to show their support come rain, sun, hail, driving wind & occasionally snow!!!!

Of course my biggest ‘THANK YOU’ goes to our beautiful Divas for giving 110% all season and for being a real credit to us all as a football club.

May we extend our congratulations to Eastbourne Girls and we look forward to joining them at their tournament later on this summer.

And finally it just leaves me to say one thing…………bring on the 2014/15 season!!!! Gooooooooo DIVAS!!!!!!!
