MATCH REPORT

AFC Worthing Youth U12’s won their first ever County Cup game with a well fought 4-1 win over visiting ASC Strikers from Shoreham. Both teams had recently been promoted to their respective A Divisions and on paper were evenly matched.

Once again the Atoms set out to play a counter attacking strategy, whilst from the kick off it was clear that Strikers looked capable of playing some great passing football. The Atoms tactics worked and they got off to a flying start with Callum scoring just a few minutes into the game, this was followed up by a lovely goal from James, following a great pass from Charlie & after Wesley’s pinpoint cross.

Whilst the Strikers played some great football they struggled to make any real chances in front of goal with the Atoms working hard to make it very hard for Strikers to find the space. Atoms got their reward with Charlie adding a third from another swift counter attacking move, driving the ball past the keeper from distance. The Strikers No 10 was the key threat, and although Max and then Harry did well to contain him, it was inevitable with his speed that he would eventually break through. Nonetheless, when it happened Adam pulled off a great save from short range, blocking a rocket of a shot and showing strong hands.

The Atoms could have scored more, The best of the chances a lovely header by Charlie marginally missing the target from a floating free kick from Ben. After half time, as expected Strikers came out fighting and the Atoms had to work very hard in their own half to soak up the pressure for much of the first 15 minutes, Strikers had by far the better chances. But, against the run of play, the Atoms scored their fourth as Wesley’s corner amazingly went straight into the net without assistance. Strikers had nothing to lose, they pushed forward again and were rewarded with a goal themselves.

In the last ten minutes the Atoms increasingly looked strong on the counter as Strikers pushed forward and both Ben and James had clear opportunities to add to the score, but the game finished 4-1 and the Atoms go forward to the next round of the County cup.

Well done boys a great achievement.
