Development Age Groups – This weeks round-up

AFC Worthing Youth U7 v Lancing Utd U7

Today’s game saw AFC Worthing Youth U7’s at home against Lancing Utd. After finding out the team we were playing drew with last week’s opponents, we thought we were going to be having a tough game. It was quite the opposite. For lots of periods of the time we had the ball with George missing a couple of chances. Unfortunately we went behind to some sleepiness at the back, but soon found ourselves level with another great free kick by Louis after another horrible foul on George.

A good performance this week, and we can see how the whole team is developing as a squad week by week. Well done team!!

Man of the match today went to Willow, a great game today for her in midfield, well done Willow.

AFC Worthing Youth U9 v Lancing Rangers Black U9

For the first time this season the U9s were able to field a complete and fully fit squad. The team took to the field with Captain James restored to his preferred outfield position, lining up alongside Mikey in central defence. We were also able to welcome back George F to the side after two weeks’ absence, and his fantastic performance only served to underline just how much we have missed him.

As with our away match against Lancing Rangers Black U9, this was a fine match with both sides attempting to play good football. Indeed, it was the away team that settled into its stride the quickest, breaking up field to put AFC Worthing Youth on the back foot. After several failed attempts to clear the ball the opposition striker was able to lash a fine, rising strike into the far corner across goalkeeper Bobby, who could do nothing about it given the quality of the effort.

However, after that early setback AFC Worthing Youth quickly settled back in to their usual rhythm. George F began to run the show, powering up the left wing and creating havoc in the opposition back line. After forcing a corner the same player was able to drive home a sublime corner kick hit low and hard into the area that deflecting off an unsuspecting Lancing defender and straight into the net.

Spurred on by their goal, AFC Worthing Youth pressed forward in search of a second. George C powered the ball home. Just ten minutes into the game, James had to leave the field due to feeling unwell. This meant Oliver joined the side on the right wing, with Billy moving into James’s spot in defence and Casper shuffling across into midfield. Shortly afterwards Leon came into defence with Casper stepping down and Billy moving back into midfield to stiffen up the team in the face of some determined attacks from Lancing Rangers Black U9, including a powerful effort on goal that hit the post rather than nestle in the net. AFC Worthing Youth tried to create chances too, and soon George C notched a third goal after his attempted cross turned into a powerful finish at the near post.

At half time AFC Worthing Youth changed things up again to give game time to more of the squad. Alex joined Leon in defence, with Mikey moving into midfield and Billy joining the substitutes. Casper came back into midfield, with George C also taking a break and Oliver enjoying a run at centre forward. Oliver soon impressed with his exceptional movement and use of space, constantly leaving his marker as he twisted and turned in search of a fourth goal. Toby stepped in to the side too, with Leon making way. At the same time our new look defence was struggling to gel and unfortunately after several attempts to clear the ball they allowed Lancing Rangers Black U9s an opportunity on goal from close range.

However, to the team’s credit they didn’t get downhearted. George F moved across to the right hand side in search of the ball and delivered a superlative cross that Oliver did brilliantly to get on to. Sadly his first time finish span upwards rather than into the goal, but as the ball cannoned around the area it eventually fell to George F to power home.

With a few minutes to go more substitutions saw George C, Billy and Leon re-enter the game at the expense of Oliver, Mikey and Casper. AFC Worthing Youth continued to create chances but so did Lancing Rangers Black U9 and, with just a few minutes remaining they were able to score again. Cue a tense and tight final few minutes to the game before the final whistle!!!

This was another good result for AFC Worthing Youth U9s. Oliver, Billy and Mikey were impressively energetic throughout the whole game, while Casper’s thoughtful passing provided a strong accompaniment to George C’s powerful forward running. At the back, Bobby can consider himself unlucky to have been beaten three times and should take a great deal of credit for his brave diving at his opponents’ feet.

Man of the Match was George F, who never stopped taking on his man and driving in crosses.

Felpham Colts U10 v AFC Worthing Youth U10

Really good tight game today. However, we were unfortunate to find ourselves 1-0 down in the first 10 minutes. Nonetheless, we piled the pressure on, without any letting up and this resulted in AFC Worthing Youth equalizing just after the start of the second half.

Once again I feel we were the better team on the day, but as they say ‘its a funny old game’. Our U10’s worked hard as a team today and really deserved the win. Keep up the hard work, each week you are growing as a squad. Really really well played today.

A fantastic goal keeping performance earned Murphy the ‘Man of the match’ award today, well done young man.
