AFCWY 1 - 0 Whyke United A
Harvey 15 mins
Whyke United arrived at Broadwater Green on Sunday morning undefeated and needing just a point to be crowned champions. The Atoms on the other hand needed victory to keep alive their title hopes and also all but confirmed there place in the A division next season. In a re-match of last seasons Invitation Cup Final the match was always going to be a tense and tight affair and so it proved.
The Atoms left out leading scorer Harvey so Brandon (who has been playing in defence for the majority of the season) turned striker. In a nervy opening both sides tried to play the football that both managers had installed of them. Ryan had the first shot of the match on 6 minutes when he received the ball from Owen on the left he cut inside but shot just over.
Whyke’s first attack came from a rare moment of miscommunication in the Atoms defence, the striker shot from the edge of the area but Jake (Man of the match) dived superbly to his left and pushed the ball to safety. Jake and the lads at the back showing why they have only conceded 5 goals in the league all season. Then a body blow for Atoms with 12 minutes on the clock Scott was forced off with what was thought to be a re-occurrence of his ankle injury sustained at the latter part of last season. This forced a major re-shuffle with Dan going to centre half and Brandon reverting to left back. Harvey strolled on and within 2 minutes showed the response every manager would want from a player who starts as a substitute. Alfie won the ball and fed Owen who played in Harvey who curled past the keeper into the bottom left hand corner for what proved to be the decisive goal.
Whyke weren’t just going to lie down and laid siege to the atoms goal for the remaining few minutes of the half but Alfie, Dan and Brandon along with Jake stood firm. Ryan saw a late shot go right across the goal but the Atoms went into the break with a slender lead.
Dan R came on at the break as the Atoms again changed formation and whilst they were unable to find a way past Whyke’s keeper the team performed to a man. Jake made 2 saves early in the half but after that was not overly troubled and the Atoms clung on for a vital victory and one they should be extremely proud of.
The Atoms are now 4 points behind leaders Whyke with both sides having to face each other once more. The title race is not over yet but the Atoms are almost certain to be playing top flight football next season! Well done to everyone connected with the team
