AFC Worthing Youth was formed in May 2005, the intention was to have a youth club based in Worthing with the opportunity for all, regardless of ability. Sponsorship was already secure with a Motor Vehicle recovery company M&W Recovery. It was decided that the clubs’ main colours would be all red as their home kit and white,red,red when playing away, our home ground is Broadwater Green. The clubs nickname is THE ATOMS and we swiftly became a member of the Saywell International Arun & Chichester Youth Football League with a team in the Under 8's age bracket.
In April 2006 the club launched its application to become a Charter Standard Club with its presentation submitted and approved within hours. This was the clubs’ commitment to the youth football scene that it had every intention to follow the F.A guidelines as set out. By May The Atoms sent out letters to various schools in and around Worthing to start a new age group at Under 7's. This was to prove a fundamental move as club was blessed with twenty six
players of all abilities including girls.The Atoms kicked off 2006/2007 season with two teams at Under 7's and
Under 9's.
June 2007 and the club becomes complete as "Tony puts it" as the much awaited all girls team starts to take shape, with two girls already on the clubs books in the Under 10's age group but playing with the boys, it was decided to reward their loyalty. A rigorous advertising campaign was followed by numerous coaching sessions, but it all paid off as the 2007/2008 season saw the AFC Worthing Diva's explode on to the youth scene and with their own club
colours of Pink shirts black shorts and black socks. They too joined the the Arun & Chichester Youth football league.
It was a testing season for the girls as they had to endure playing against all boys teams, it’s was their decision! and they are better for it. They have a lot to offer and together they have a big heart which is their biggest asset but most of all they have become great friends and have a strong bond.
The 2007/2008 season also saw the club rewarded with its first piece of silverware The Under 10's Division D League title won in some style with only one defeat along the way. It was to be a three horse race right up to the final day but the boys pulled it off with a nervy 2-0 win away to Middleton Diamonds. Winning the league was a special
moment as these boys were the clubs’ first ever players back in 2005 when it all started, and they reached the 1/4
finals of the Invitation Cup and also set a club record of being unbeaten in nineteen league games stretching from
January 2007 to January 2008.
Which brings us to last season 2008/2009 with four teams already established it was decided to form another team at the youngest age yet, so the club advertised for 5 year old boys and girls to come and join the club.
It was a move that would prove vital and the club now has twelve Under 7's registered. The baby Atoms will come online for the new season of 2009-10 . Moving on to the current teams, they have all now moved up an age group, last seasons title winners moved up to 11-a-side football and have had a tough season as they have found the step up from mini soccer hard. Last seasons under 9's teams came top of their division and the Under 9 B’s finished an extremely respectable second position in their division. Under 9's A team won The Invitation Cup Final.
The Diva's joined the Sussex County Women & Girls Football League and finished 3rd place in the Under 11's Division and they reached the Challenge Cup Semi Final.
So just summarise, The club has five established teams, plus we are just starting to recruit for an Under 6 mixed team and an Under 9 Diva’s all girls team. We currently has eight qualified Coaches, six at F.A level One and two at F.A level two and two more parents will attend to get their level one badge in May bringing the total of
qualified coaches to ten.
AFC Worthing Youth’s mission is to coach the children to the best of their ability to hopefully play a quality standard of football.
