Match report

A sunny day saw a very tight game between the AFC Worthing Divas and Southdown Girls FC. Both teams played well throughout the whole of the first-half of the match but neither team could capitalise on opportunities to go into the lead. As the first-half went on Lauren received an injury and had to be taken off. One of our teams newest players Lilli made her first cup game appearance. Half time 0-0.

With both teams knowing they had to score otherwise the game would go to penalties everyone was determined to get the ball into the back of the net. Divas were on top of the game with goalkeeper Darian making some outstanding saves and with Millie upfront creating chances at goal. Southdown were quieter but when they did attack they were very dangerous. The Divas defence were vital in making clean tackles to win the ball. The Divas were unlucky not to get the killer goal, having hit the post four times and the crossbar twice, the girls began to think maybe it wasn’t their day. The final whistle blew and the game went to extra time.

The whistle blew for extra time and both teams had equal opportunities at goal but an extra twenty minutes wasn’t enough for either teams to score any goals.

Nerve-jangling penalty shoot-out

A penalty shoot out was the only way to decide which team would go through to the final.

  • Gypsy went first and she slotted it into the top left corner, the Southdown keeper had no chance as Divas had their first penalty in the bag
  • Southdown went forward to take theirs and as they did so Darian made an outstanding save to solidify Divas lead
  • Divas captain Millie went next and slotted her penalty into the bottom left hand corner, Divas were on top of this shoot out
  • Darian went on to save Southdown’s next penalty
  • Ellie then scored Diva’s third penalty-kick – it was now down to Southdown’s third penalty-taker, if Darian saved it, AFC Worthing Divas would be in the Final
  • Their player went high and Darian jumped and punched it over the bar – Divas had won!

A well deserved win by the Divas, where although the girls had lots of chances they couldn’t find the finish. It took a penalty shoot-out, but the girls were determined till the end to gain a place in the final. The defence, midfield and strikers all did extremely well. Darian was our girl of the game for making some incredible saves throughout the game and for keeping a clean-sheet in the penalty shoot-out seeing the Divas onto victory.

Congratulations to The Divas. The team will now meet Crawley Wasps in the final in March.
